Google Announces $40M Commitment to the Genesis Mission for Scientific Discovery

Google is committing $40 million in artificial intelligence tokens and cloud credits to support the Genesis Mission, a national effort to harness artificial intelligence and double the pace of American scientific discovery within a decade. Announced at the Department of Energy Genesis Mission Summit 2026, the funding expands upon previous agency partnerships by directly equipping researchers with advanced technology.

Under this commitment, Department of Energy Genesis Mission awardees will receive in-kind access to Google DeepMind tools for science. These include AlphaEvolve for designing advanced algorithms, AlphaFold 3 for predicting biomolecular structures, AlphaGenome for analyzing DNA variations, WeatherNext for weather forecasting, and AlphaEarth Foundations for mapping the planet. Additionally, tens of thousands of users across the national laboratories will receive one-year access to Gemini for Government seats and tokens to support research, operations, and management.

Practical applications of these tools are already visible across the laboratory ecosystem. At the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, scientists are using AlphaEvolve to map complex mathematical systems and uncover hidden connections automatically. At the National Laboratory of the Rockies, researchers are using Gemini to control physical hardware, reducing microscope calibration time by a factor of eight and cutting manual focusing steps from fifty down to two to enable autonomous workflows.

This initiative matters because modern research faces unprecedented complexity in fields like fusion plasma dynamics and materials science, where vast amounts of experimental data require advanced solutions. By providing these frontier AI tools, Google aims to help scientists accelerate breakthroughs across critical energy, security, and scientific challenges while enabling autonomous experimentation that reaches previously inaccessible areas of material design.
