Anthropic commits $10 million to Canadian AI research

Anthropic is committing ten million Canadian dollars to fund research into beneficial and responsible artificial intelligence applications across Canada. The funding involves partnerships with eight key Canadian research institutions and hospitals, including the Amii, Mila, and Vector regional institutes, the University of Toronto, Université de Montréal, Université Laval, the University of Saskatchewan, CHEO, and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. These organizations will receive API credits to support diverse projects spanning trust and safety, pediatric health, computational mental health, low-resource languages, and quantum computing. Additionally, Anthropic is bringing Amii, Mila, and Vector into its startup program, granting hundreds of affiliated Canadian founders at least five thousand US dollars each in API credits.

Data from the March 2026 Anthropic Economic Index shows that Canada ranks eighth globally in overall Claude.ai consumer use and second worldwide on a per-capita basis when adjusted for working-age population. Adoption rates track local economic activities, with professional and technical work driving usage in British Columbia and Ontario, while translation requests peak in provinces with higher government employment due to bilingualism regulations.

This investment recognizes Canada's historical contributions to deep learning and reinforcement learning, building on the country's national artificial intelligence strategies. Anthropic aims to support ongoing innovation in Canadian universities, hospitals, and startups as democracies work to shape the governance of advanced artificial intelligence.
