Ben Bernanke appointed to Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust
Dr. Ben Bernanke, the former Chair of the Federal Reserve and a Nobel Prize-winning economist, has been appointed to the Long-Term Benefit Trust at Anthropic. This independent body is responsible for overseeing the company’s commitment to developing artificial intelligence that benefits humanity. The trust operates independently of Anthropic’s management and investors, holding no equity in the company and receiving no share of its profits.
The Long-Term Benefit Trust serves as a check on Anthropic’s development and deployment of AI. Its members have the authority to appoint individuals to the company’s board and provide guidance on critical decisions regarding societal risks and long-term impacts. By joining the trust, Bernanke will contribute his expertise in economic research and policy to help the company navigate the potential disruptions AI may cause to global workforces and economies.
Anthropic is structured as a Public Benefit Corporation, which requires it to balance commercial goals with social responsibility. The addition of Bernanke to the trust is intended to strengthen the company’s ability to anticipate the economic consequences of its technology. He joins existing trustees Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine, and Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, who collectively provide oversight based on backgrounds in national security, law, policy, and global health.
