Danish regions shared sensitive patient data in major AI project
Region Hovedstaden and Region Sjælland shared more than 100,000 patient messages as part of a major artificial intelligence project without anonymizing the data first. Internal documents from the two regions show that the shared information includes sensitive details about treatment processes, questions regarding diagnoses, requests for medication renewals, and descriptions of new anxiety attacks.
The data sharing involves messages from vulnerable groups, including cancer patients and mentally ill children. According to experts reviewing the case, the regions violated the law on multiple counts by sharing these unanonymized, highly sensitive personal details.
The concerned regional authorities have rejected the criticism directed at them regarding the handling of the patient information in the artificial intelligence project.
