Vestager and Nobel laureates sound AI alarm over European dependency

Margrethe Vestager has joined forces with a group of economists and artificial intelligence researchers to issue a warning that Europe risks becoming dependent on American AI technology. According to their new strategy, a critical window of opportunity is closing month by month, and urgent initiatives are needed to protect Europe's prosperity, security, and sovereignty in the artificial intelligence era.

The strategy outlines concrete actions set to begin immediately, including the creation of a transnational alliance to give Europe stronger leverage when negotiating access to powerful AI technology. It also calls for a radical expansion of data center capacity across the continent, an effort that Vestager acknowledges will not be easily embraced by the public, though she believes a solution is in place.

This alarm has been triggered by the rapid acceleration of AI development. Without these immediate steps to strengthen Europe's position and build its own technological capacity, the continent faces the growing risk of falling behind and relying entirely on foreign systems.
