According to assessments by Epoch, Opus 5 achieved an Epoch Capabilities Index score of 159, which is slightly below Fable 5 at 161, though it matched Fable 5 with a score of 161 on software engineering benchmarks.
The launch generated debate because many users felt the numerical benchmark scores understated the model's actual improvements in day-to-day use. Several practitioners reported strong results in coding tasks and agentic tool use, including demonstrations of browser automation where the model successfully navigated interfaces. However, some evaluators noted anomalies, such as Opus 5 performing better at medium effort levels than at high effort levels on certain coding benchmarks, pointing to possible evaluation instabilities or search tradeoffs.
Alongside the Opus 5 release, industry attention centered on a major open-weight policy letter signed by over twenty companies, including NVIDIA, Meta, Microsoft, and Hugging Face. The signatories urged policymakers to avoid premature restrictions on open-weight AI models, arguing that open access benefits safety, innovation, and global sovereignty. This effort contrasted with the positioning of closed frontier labs like OpenAI and Anthropic, highlighting an ongoing industry split over open-source distribution versus closed commercial models.
