Who is responsible when the AI pilot works?

A vast majority of Norwegian businesses invest in artificial intelligence, yet more than half lack formal follow-up to track what these investments actually deliver. While finding the budget and enthusiasm for a pilot project is relatively easy, scaling up and placing responsibility for the results proves much harder.

Data shows that only about eight percent of organizations have fully integrated artificial intelligence across their entire business, while nearly a third remain in an experimental phase. A common issue is that the IT department often owns the investment, while the actual gains must be realized in departments like customer service or sales. Consequently, technology can work as planned without making the broader business more efficient.

Businesses track IT costs closely, but very few measure the innovation pace, revenue effects, or risk. Only a tiny fraction actively follow artificial intelligence risk, and data quality remains a major challenge. To succeed, organizations must ensure that leaders owning the specific work processes also take responsibility for the results and risks rather than leaving everything to technology teams.
