AI Factories or Green Transition: Danish Government Faces Critical Choice

The global artificial intelligence boom is driving a massive surge in demand for large datacentre infrastructure worldwide. Major tech companies, including Meta, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, invested a combined 280.5 billion dollars in new datacenters last year, with that figure projected to reach 630 billion dollars this year, driven largely by artificial intelligence development.

To reduce Europe's dependence on American tech giants, the European Union plans to build up to seven AI mega factories. Following this trend, the Danish government decided this past summer to reserve computing power in one of these upcoming mega factories at a cost of 750 million kroner.

However, the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure is moving faster than the green transition can handle. This creates a critical dilemma, as the immense power and resource demands required for artificial intelligence ambitions may ultimately force the Danish government to compromise its established green profile.
