AI factories or green transition: The Danish government faces a critical choice
A global boom in artificial intelligence is driving an explosive demand for massive datacentre infrastructure. Major technology companies like Meta, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon dramatically increased their combined investments in new datacentres from 280.5 billion US dollars last year to 630 billion dollars this year, with seventy-seven percent of this year's total directed toward artificial intelligence development.
To reduce Europe's dependence on American tech giants, the European Union plans to build up to seven AI gigafactories. As part of this regional push, the Danish government decided this past summer to reserve computing power in one of these upcoming European gigafactories at a cost of 750 million kroner.
However, the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure is moving too fast for the green transition to keep pace. This situation presents a critical dilemma, as the massive energy requirements needed to power these ambitious artificial intelligence projects threaten to force the Danish government into compromising its established green profile.
