EU lawmakers want to introduce an AI Liability Act
Four leading European Union lawmakers want the European Commission to create a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Liability Act. The proposed legislation would hold the developers of the most advanced AI models responsible for damages caused by their technology.
The goal is to close perceived gaps in current legislation and make it easier for individuals and businesses to claim compensation when AI causes harm. While the existing European Union Artificial Intelligence Act includes safety requirements for advanced models and addresses systemic risks such as cyberattacks and manipulation, it does not cover situations where damage has already occurred.
This proposal stems from a growing concern over increasingly capable artificial intelligence models and agents. The initiative has received support from parliamentarians across several political groups.
The proposal remains in an early stage, and no finalized legislative draft exists yet.
