Danske Bank Completes Denmark’s AI Agent Payment With Mastercard

Danske Bank and Mastercard have successfully completed what is described as Denmark’s first payment that was both initiated and finished by an artificial intelligence agent. Mark Wraa-Hansen, who leads personal banking for Danske Bank in Denmark, explained that the test explores how customers may interact with financial services in the future.

The bank is evaluating the technology with a strong focus on usefulness, trust, and customer control. Through the Mastercard partnership, the organizations aim to demonstrate that new automation tools can operate within established security and transparency frameworks.

This Danish transaction follows previous European Agent Pay pilots. These developments raise practical questions that banks must address, including determining how much authority to give an agent, how to limit that authority, how to distinguish a customer's actual intent from the agent's interpretation, and who is responsible for financial losses if the agent books an incorrect transaction.

For Danske Bank, this payment experiment is part of a broader ongoing initiative involving artificial intelligence technology.
