Norway and Finland propose international AI oversight
Norway and Finland have proposed the creation of an international body to oversee the development and use of artificial intelligence. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb introduced the joint initiative amid growing concerns from artificial intelligence companies regarding the rapid emergence of increasingly powerful systems.
Under the proposal, artificial intelligence must remain under human direction and control, and its use must comply with international law. The framework requires companies developing these technologies to establish open and verifiable safety protocols. Specifically, the proposed measures mandate the testing of models prior to deployment, alongside independent audits and assessments.
The initiative emphasizes that businesses, governments, and societies must actively address the risks associated with artificial intelligence. Additionally, the plan aims to prevent a widening technological gap between nations regarding access to the benefits of artificial intelligence.
