Dansk ekspert har ingen tillid til selvregulering af AI-giganter

Data ethics expert Gry Hasselbalch has no confidence in self-regulation by major artificial intelligence companies and urges them instead to follow existing international laws. Her comments follow statements by OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman at the Dreamforce tech conference in San Francisco, where he announced that tech companies are working to establish a body to create safety standards for artificial intelligence. Altman also compared potential accidents involving artificial intelligence to plane crashes during his conference appearance.

Hasselbalch criticizes the industry approach, stating that allowing tech giants to regulate themselves is not the best solution and that they should comply with existing rules such as the Council of Europe framework convention on artificial intelligence and human rights. She expresses concern about the lack of transparency surrounding the proposed new safety body, noting that large technology companies historically have very low traditions of openness.

Hasselbalch also dismisses Altman's comparison of artificial intelligence accidents to plane crashes as hollow. She points out that the technology companies were not nearly as concerned when they initially launched generative models that have already significantly impacted democracy, education, workplaces, and the creative economy.
