Open Source AI Gap Map
Current AI, a non-profit organization established at the 2025 AI Action Summit, has released the Gap Map v0.1. This project serves as an index of the current open-source artificial intelligence landscape, aiming to build a public option for AI technology. The initiative is supported by 400 million dollars in committed funding.
The Gap Map provides a detailed analysis of 421 specific products, including software tools, libraries, models, datasets, and hardware projects. These items are categorized into 14 groups across three layers of the technology stack: model components, product and user experience, and infrastructure. While these 421 products have been researched and scored, the project also tracks a long tail of over 24,000 additional artifacts that remain uncategorized.
The project makes its underlying data publicly available under an MIT license through a GitHub repository. This release includes over 1,000 YAML files, along with the schemas and scripts used to gather the information. By providing this data, the organization allows developers and researchers to explore the broader ecosystem of over 16,000 tracked GitHub repositories. This effort provides a structured view of the open-source AI field, helping to identify the current state of development and the gaps that remain in the industry.
