Norwegian media take legal action to block Meta from using their content

Norwegian media companies have taken legal action to stop Meta from using their content. The Norwegian Media Businesses' Association (MBL), the industry body representing them, is behind the move, and its head, Lene Eltvik Vindfeld, explained the reasoning in a statement.

Vindfeld said Meta uses media groups' investments to develop artificial intelligence services that compete with them directly. She called this both unacceptable and a distortion of competition. She also voiced a wider worry: that the tech companies will use their power to secure rights over journalistic content.

The material available gives no further detail on the case, such as which court is involved, what specific relief is being sought, or how Meta has responded.

Separately, the report notes that Meta's shares fell even though the company reported stronger-than-expected quarterly revenue. Meta also forecast fourth-quarter sales above Wall Street estimates and pointed to rapid adoption of its new AI agent app, Muse.

The dispute matters because it pits news publishers against a major AI developer over whether journalism can be used to build competing AI products. Norwegian publishers are arguing that their reporting is being turned into a commercial rival, and that the balance of power over who controls such content is at stake.
