Danish media outlet with AI-written news launches Tuesday
Projekt Y, a new Danish news outlet whose stories are written with the help of artificial intelligence, goes live on Tuesday at 13.00. Editors choose the stories, but the drafts are produced by AI. Editor-in-chief Michael Dyrby calls the output "AI-assisted" and stresses that AI does not do everything. Editors select and angle the material, have a draft produced, and then review it. They may ask for a rewrite or rewrite it themselves, pick the images and publish. Dyrby says this makes the outlet "quite classic" and not so different from others.
AI assistants are also used to find stories, in research reports, press releases and other media, the same places other outlets look. The stated ambition is more quality journalism per employee.
Asked whether there is demand for AI-generated news, Dyrby says they will find out. He calls the outlet a development project and "a kind of basic research", and notes that new things rarely have demand before they begin. He recalls that when he helped start TV 2 News in the mid-2000s, critics said Denmark lacked enough news for a 24-hour channel.
Projekt Y will start with Danish politics, business and international news. Its outlook is center-right but not dogmatic or ideological, focused on freedom, community, self-determination and progress, and on people doing something special, which Dyrby calls "anti-Jante-law stories". It targets readers aged roughly 28 to 55-60 who want a different approach or a free outlet. It has received media support and will carry ads. Sport and culture may be added later.
Projekt Y is also a technology platform. Dyrby says more releases will follow through the rest of the year and in 2027. The aim is technology simple enough for anyone to create their own media outlet, which he says would democratise the use of media.
