Denmark's AI lead opens a bigger market for the Danish IT industry

Denmark led Europe in business use of artificial intelligence in 2025. According to Eurostat's EU-harmonised figures, 42 percent of Danish companies used at least one AI technology, compared with 20 percent across the EU as a whole. That headline number was already known. What the new report, Dansk Økonomi, efterår 2026 from the Danish Economic Councils (De Økonomiske Råd), sets out to explain is what lies behind the gap.

The report's first finding, reflected in one of its section headings, is that the structure of Danish industry explains only a small part of Denmark's lead. In other words, the difference is not mainly a matter of Denmark having a business mix that happens to suit AI.

The piece also points to how differently AI can be used across sectors. Manufacturers can apply it in production, maintenance and quality control. Trading companies can use it for forecasting and customer service, while advisory firms can use it for analysis and document work. Because needs vary this much, the piece argues that understanding specific industries becomes more important for suppliers of AI solutions. That is the link to its title, which presents Denmark's lead as opening a bigger market for the Danish IT industry.

The figures carry limits. They cover companies with at least ten employees in selected private, non-financial sectors. A company counts as an AI user if it uses at least one of eight AI technologies. The measure does not capture how intensively AI is used, how mature the use is, or its effect on productivity or finances, so the 42 percent shows breadth of adoption rather than depth or results.
