Business Sweden report: how Swedish firms can tap global AI ecosystems

Business Sweden has published a report on how Swedish companies can draw on leading global AI ecosystems rather than relying on the domestic market alone. It examines the global AI landscape, the distinct strengths of the main hubs, how those strengths map onto the needs of Sweden's core industries, and the routes companies can take to reach the capabilities they need.

The starting point is that Sweden has strong R&D capabilities, advanced digital infrastructure and a highly innovative industrial base. But AI capabilities are increasingly concentrated in a few leading global hubs, and Sweden is limited by the depth of its capital and the size of its talent pool. According to the report, that means Swedish firms need to look beyond home turf to stay competitive.

The report's central advice is selectivity. No single AI hub offers everything, and each leading hub has its own strengths. Companies should therefore engage in a targeted, gap-driven way, identifying what they lack and choosing hubs accordingly, rather than expanding broadly across geographies.

It also says AI strategy has to be tailored by sector and by execution pathway. Swedish industries map differently onto the global hubs. Depending on the capability they need, how fast they need it and how much risk they are willing to take, companies can build, partner or pursue M&A. The options run from establishing a local presence in a hub to partnerships and acquisitions.

For Swedish industry, the report frames engagement with global AI centres as a strategic necessity driven by specific capability gaps, not a generic internationalisation push.
