Swedish Government Offices blocks ChatGPT and Claude on staff computers

Sweden's Government Offices (Regeringskansliet) has blocked the AI tools ChatGPT and Claude on staff work computers, according to Swedish public radio's Ekot. The aim is to make sure employees use only services that have been approved for official work.

One of the approved tools is Microsoft's Copilot, where the Government Offices is also reported to have raised security. Digitalisation director Mikael Wettercrantz explained the reasoning in a comment on the internal intranet. He wrote that using AI services without an agreement in place could have "consequences for our information security."

The block is not the first of its kind at the Government Offices, which had already restricted the use of the Chinese AI tool DeepSeek.

The Government Offices is not alone among Swedish public bodies. Ekot reports that similar blocks have been introduced at the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and at the National Board of Institutional Care (Statens institutionsstyrelse, Sis). The Enforcement Authority (Kronofogden) may also introduce one.

Taken together, the measures show Swedish government bodies steering staff toward a small set of vetted, contractually covered AI tools rather than allowing open use of public chatbots. The stated concern is information security when no agreement governs how the services are used.
