Anthropic and OpenAI adjust model access and usage limits
Anthropic has extended access to its Claude Fable 5 model for all paid subscribers through July 19. This update also maintains a 50 percent increase in weekly usage limits for the Claude Code tool. Users can utilize up to half of their weekly allowance for Fable 5, after which they must either use additional credits or switch to a different model. The company originally implemented these restrictions due to compute constraints and a need to better understand user demand.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is taking a different approach with its GPT-5.6 Sol model. The company has removed the five-hour usage limit for all Plus, Business, and Pro plans. Additionally, OpenAI is rolling out efficiency updates designed to reduce the amount of usage consumed by the model, allowing users to complete more tasks within their existing limits. OpenAI reports that it has reached 6 million active users and is currently resetting usage quotas to accommodate this growth.
These adjustments highlight the ongoing competition between the two companies as they manage the high compute demands of their latest generative AI models. While Anthropic continues to use temporary extensions to manage its infrastructure, OpenAI is prioritizing broader access and efficiency to attract and retain its growing user base. These shifts in policy directly impact how subscribers interact with these advanced tools on a daily basis.
