Generate Biomedicines and Zealand Pharma Team Up in AI-Driven Obesity Drug Pact Worth Up to $1.2 Billion
Generate Biomedicines, a Massachusetts-based biotech, and Denmark's Zealand Pharma have formed a strategic partnership to develop AI-engineered protein therapies for obesity and other metabolic diseases. The deal gives Generate a way into the obesity market, which the report describes as lucrative.
Generate will receive $30 million upfront and up to $35 million in early preclinical milestone payments. Across two initial programs, total milestone payments could reach nearly $1.2 billion, and Generate would also earn tiered royalties on future sales. Generate will lead research and drug design through lead candidate selection.
For Zealand Pharma, the agreement widens its drug development toolkit beyond peptides and small molecules. The company has more than 25 years of experience in peptide research and has taken over 10 drug candidates into clinical development, three of them in late-stage trials. Chief scientific officer Utpal Singh said the partnership would complement Zealand's existing capabilities and support its broader metabolic health strategy.
The deal links a Danish drugmaker with an AI-driven protein design company in the obesity field. The headline figure of nearly $1.2 billion depends on milestones being met, so the guaranteed money is the $30 million upfront payment, with the $35 million in early preclinical milestones the next step if those are reached.
