The Nordics' AI Boom Meets the Power Test

Data center developers across Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland are moving beyond conventional cloud regions and enterprise colocation toward high-density AI campuses of several hundred megawatts, with energy infrastructure built into the plans. Hyperscalers, AI cloud providers, infrastructure developers and institutional investors are all involved. The piece frames this as a test of the region's power capacity, and singles out Finland as the place where the scale of the change is most evident, though the text available here breaks off before explaining why.

In Denmark, atNorth and Selected Group are advancing a project in Ølgod that would use surplus heat from atNorth's DEN02 campus to support greenhouse food production. Selected Group reported in October that the local development plan had been approved. The first phase covers two 10-hectare greenhouses, and the first growing season is targeted for 2028.

In Narvik, Norway, AI infrastructure provider Nscale has expanded its agreement with Microsoft for a 230 MW campus. The plan includes deploying more than 30,000 NVIDIA Rubin GPUs during 2027. Nscale then announced $790 million in additional financing, backed by a group of European banks and export-financing institutions, to support continued development. The combination of a named hyperscale customer, specified computing deployments and institutional financing sets Narvik apart from other projects.
