Denmark Introduces Bill Protecting People's Face and Voice from AI Impersonation

Denmark has introduced a bill to protect people from realistic AI-generated impersonations of their face and voice. The Danish government formally introduced the legislation on October 8, 2026. It has not yet become law and still needs approval from Parliament.

The proposal would amend Denmark's Copyright Act. It would give individuals new legal protections against digital copies of their appearance and voice being shared without their consent. The scenarios it targets are a convincing AI-made video of a person saying something they never said, and audio that sounds exactly like someone's voice even though they never recorded it.

If Parliament approves it, Denmark could become one of the countries taking a particularly direct approach to protecting personal identity in the age of artificial intelligence. The sources cited for the account are the Danish Ministry of Culture, the European Commission and Euronews.

The bill also raises a question that reaches well beyond Denmark. As AI gets better at reproducing human appearances and voices, who should have the final say over how those digital likenesses are used? The Danish proposal answers by putting that control in the hands of the individual whose face or voice is being copied.

The text available here is only a partial excerpt, so it does not describe the bill's detailed provisions, such as exceptions, penalties or how it would be enforced.
