Matters raises USD 5 mln pre-seed for an AI-native bank
Matters, a Sweden-based AI-native personal finance platform, has raised USD 5 million in a pre-seed round as it emerges from stealth. The round is anchored by Swedish angel investor Jakob Johansson. Other participants include Knut Frängsmyr, a former Chief Operating Officer at Klarna; Douglas Stark, Co-Founder of Voi; Johan Bladh, CEO of Röko; Patrik Tran, CEO of Validio; and Per Widerstrom, CEO of Evoke.
The company plans to use the money to apply for licences, expand across the EU, grow its team and user base, and potentially make strategic acquisitions. Matters aims to rebuild banking around AI and automation. The article's section heading points to a flat-fee banking model with an AI advisor, but the available text does not detail how that model works.
Matters has also appointed Lars-Åke Norling, former CEO of Nordnet, as Chair. Nordnet is a European savings and investment platform, and its market capitalisation rose tenfold in less than seven years under Norling, reaching SEK 80 billion (USD 8.4 billion). Norling said his career in regulated consumer finance gives him confidence in Matters' prospects.
The founder is Per Österström, who previously founded Sambla Group, a Nordic consumer loan broker. He grew Sambla to more than 400 employees and roughly USD 200 million in revenue before selling it to Nordic Capital in early 2021. Matters is his second fintech venture.
The round shows Nordic fintech figures backing a new attempt at AI-first banking, with a founder and chair who have both built and scaled financial businesses. The licensing and EU expansion plans indicate the company intends to operate as a regulated provider rather than only as an app.
