Swedish corporations' new AI supercomputer Sferical One is inaugurated
Sferical AI, a company formed last year by Wallenberg Investments, AstraZeneca, Ericsson, Saab and SEB to run and develop advanced AI infrastructure for Swedish businesses, has inaugurated its first AI supercomputer, Sferical One. The announcement was made on the day of the inauguration.
The machine is built on 16 Nvidia DGX GB300 systems and has been in operation since the end of the summer. So far it has been used to explore drug development at AstraZeneca, foundation models for telecommunications at Ericsson, defence applications at Saab, financial services at SEB and industrial applications at SKF.
Jenny Nordlöw, CEO of Sferical AI, says Sferical One lets companies train and run AI models at larger scale on a sovereign platform. She says what makes Sferical unique is not only the technology but that several of Sweden's largest companies share the same infrastructure, develop solutions together and share knowledge across industries, which she argues creates value beyond the infrastructure itself.
Sferical AI will also offer AI services based on Nemotron, Nvidia's multimodal AI models, which can be adapted to individual companies' needs.
Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement that Sweden, a country of ten million people, has produced many world-changing companies. He said the shared supercomputer will give further momentum to development and mobilise researchers, entrepreneurs and scientists to build up the Swedish AI ecosystem.
