Swedish fintech startup secures $5 million pre-seed to build AI-powered consumer bank

Stockholm-based fintech startup Matters has come out of stealth with a $5 million pre-seed round. The company, founded in April 2026, is building an AI-powered personal finance platform that combines neobank services with an AI advisor. The advisor is meant to help users understand their spending habits, make better financial decisions, increase savings and work towards financial goals.

The round is anchored by Swedish angel investor Jakob Johansson. Other participants include Knut Frängsmyr, former COO of Klarna; Douglas Stark, co-founder of Voi; Johan Bladh, CEO of Röko; Patrik Tran, CEO of Validio; and Per Widerström, CEO of Evoke.

Matters plans a subscription model in which customers pay a flat monthly fee. Selected revenue generated through transactions, including interchange and foreign exchange, will be returned to users as cashback. The company says this aligns its revenue with customers' financial interests. CEO Per Österström put it this way: "Banks earn more when consumers manage their money worse." He previously founded Sambla Group, a consumer loan brokerage that grew to more than 400 employees before being sold to Nordic Capital in 2021. Lars-Åke Norling, former CEO of Nordnet, is chair. According to the company, Nordnet's market capitalisation rose tenfold to SEK 80 billion in under seven years under his leadership.

The funding will go towards regulatory licensing, expansion across the EU, growing the 14-person team, user acquisition and possibly strategic acquisitions. The first consumer product has not launched yet, but the company says it is due in the coming weeks.

The move reflects growing interest among fintechs in AI for consumer finance, such as automated guidance and personalised money management. Matters still has to secure the regulatory approvals needed for its banking ambitions and for expansion into new markets.
