Finnish startup Ambio raises \u20ac5.1 million seed for AI recycled plastics procurement
Helsinki-based startup Ambio has raised a €5.1 million seed round to build an AI-powered procurement platform for recycled plastics. The round was led by European venture firm b2venture, with participation from Montis VC and existing investor Lifeline Ventures. The money will go toward international expansion and broadening the platform across different polymer types.
The problem Ambio targets is that buying recycled plastics is hard for industrial buyers. Material properties vary by source, processing history and batch, and quality data is often incomplete or inconsistent. Manufacturers frequently cannot tell whether a material will meet production requirements until it has been tested on the production line. Demand is still growing, driven by sustainability goals, regulation and customer expectations, and recycled polymers can also be cheaper and reduce reliance on fossil-based raw materials imported from outside Europe.
Ambio's platform covers the whole process from material discovery and qualification to long-term supply agreements. It assesses materials using verified samples, quality documentation and defined protocols, and builds a structured dataset on material properties, suppliers, pricing and transaction outcomes. A matching engine uses that data to improve recommendations, quotations and procurement over time. Ambio also acts as the principal supplier rather than only offering software or a marketplace, taking responsibility for quality assurance and coordinating the supply chain between recycled-plastic producers and buyers.
CEO Tommi Bergström says adoption is held back by trust, not just regulation. Buyers of virgin plastic know what they are getting, while recycled material only proves itself on the production line. Ambio's goal is to predict whether a material will work before sampling even happens.
b2venture partner Mathias Ockenfels pointed to the proprietary recyclate-quality dataset, the principal model and an engine that improves with each transaction as a compounding competitive moat. He expects Ambio to become the central marketplace for recycled plastics in Europe and beyond. The company's longer-term aim is pan-European procurement and verification infrastructure for recycled plastics.
