Scaleway to build AMD-powered AI supercomputer in Sweden
Scaleway, the French cloud provider, is building an AI supercomputer in Sweden. The company says it will be the first AMD-based AI supercomputer for commercial use in Europe, and it will be open to startups, AI companies and businesses across the continent.
The machine will run on AMD Instinct MI355X chips, which the article describes as AMD's answer to Nvidia's Blackwell line, the hardware that powers most AI computing globally. The French company Bull will carry out the assembly.
Scaleway chose Sweden because of its largely low-carbon electricity and its AI sector. The company entered the Swedish market in May, when it signed a deal with telecom operator Tele2 to sell its cloud and AI services there.
AMD hardware is not new in Europe. AMD chips already power supercomputers used for European research, including LUMI in Finland, and US cloud firms such as Oracle and Vultr already rent AMD chips to European customers. What sets the Scaleway project apart, according to the company, is that it would be a commercial AI supercomputer based on AMD, available to European customers.
The project matters for European AI infrastructure. It adds a commercial option built on AMD hardware to a market where Nvidia's chips dominate, and it places that capacity in the Nordics, where the low-carbon power supply was a stated reason for the choice. The article does not give a timeline, a cost or the size of the system.
