At the January JP Morgan healthcare conference, artificial intelligence and pharmaceutical tool deals surged, highlighted by the two-year-old, OpenAI-backed startup Chai Discovery achieving a four billion dollar valuation. Traditionally, artificial intelligence companies in the pharma space shifted toward building their own drug pipelines because it was easier to prove their value than to sell unproven software tools across multiple portfolios.

That dynamic shifted because artificial intelligence tools advanced enough for pharmaceutical drug design teams to genuinely trust. Rather than merely improving efficiency, these models now enable capabilities that were previously impossible through traditional lab-based discovery, such as designing complex antibodies that trigger specific molecular cascades or bind to two different proteins.

By producing better molecules straight out of the gate, these design tools accelerate iteration times and transform biological science into an engineering problem. Structural models have evolved into binding models that accurately predict how molecules interact, unlocking new design possibilities.

To capitalize on this shift, Chai Discovery prioritizes user experience and product design, creating specialized software tools modeled after computer-aided design and graphics programs rather than standard chatbots. By working closely with pharmaceutical partners to build what researchers actually request, Chai has secured major partnerships and deal expansions with companies including Eli Lilly, Novartis, and argenx.
