Artificial intelligence to help Danish Defence detect drone threats

Denmark's Defence Ministry Materiel and Procurement Agency (FMI) has signed an agreement with the Danish company Systematic to deliver a new command and control system for countering drones, such as those that flew over Denmark in 2025. The agency announced the deal in a press release on Thursday. It will help military and civilian authorities coordinate their response.

The system uses artificial intelligence to analyse large amounts of information and find patterns, deviations and possible threats. The Armed Forces and bodies such as the police will have access to the same information, giving them a shared basis for action from the moment a drone is observed until a response has been carried out. Systematic's SitaWare software will be rolled out at a number of military locations and linked to existing drone defence systems. The press release does not say what the agreement costs or when the system will be ready for use.

Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus (S) said the deal brings Denmark a step closer to building its "drone shield". He added that it is another Danish supplier that can give the Armed Forces better ways to respond to threats from the air and strengthen security of supply as the security situation keeps changing.

The agreement follows a purchase from the Danish defence company Terma that FMI announced in August. Terma's system is meant to connect different sensors and combine their data into one common picture of drone activity. According to FMI, the Systematic deal should be seen together with the Terma deal.

The article also notes wider efforts on national preparedness. Denmark has a national situation centre within the Danish Agency for Social Security Preparedness, and in September the government set up a direct line between it, business and civil society to improve cooperation before, during and after crises. The government has also decided to set up a joint round-the-clock situation centre linked to the National Operational Staff, to improve authorities' ability to detect and handle hybrid threats, among other things.
