Google's AI Data Center Work in Finland Halted by Authorities

Finland's Licensing and Supervision Authority has ordered Google subsidiary Tuike Finland to immediately suspend construction work at planned data center sites in Muhos and Kajaani. The company was given a deadline of October 23 to halt the work and submit a written response regarding whether it intends to comply. If the directive is ignored, the authority holds the power to pursue further enforcement measures against the company.

The suspension has been issued because the environmental impact assessment procedures for both data center projects are still ongoing. These official assessment reports are currently expected to be completed before the end of 2026.

Despite the regulatory halt, the broader investment plan involves significant energy preparations to support the future electricity demands of the infrastructure. Tuike Finland has entered into a 22-year agreement with Finnish energy group Fortum to extend the operating life of the Loviisa nuclear power plant. Additionally, the investment includes future plans for new wind power generation and battery storage facilities in the country.
