Unpacking ChatGPT Work: the Agent for a Billion Users

ChatGPT Work is an agent product for knowledge work released by OpenAI in July 2026. It integrates multiple existing tools and platforms, including chat interfaces and coding assistant apps, into a single system designed for everyday users. Within weeks of its release, Work and its related coding app crossed 10 million users, serving as a preview for how ChatGPT's billion weekly active users will interact with the application following a planned merger later in the year.

The product operates inside a cloud-based microcomputer workspace, allowing users to connect it with external workplace services like email, calendars, and project trackers to gather context and generate finished artifacts such as spreadsheets, documents, presentations, and hosted web applications. Users can execute tasks across web, mobile, and desktop applications, with desktop users able to choose between cloud mode and local mode for direct computer use. To maintain safety and structure, continuity and memory across tasks are managed externally by ChatGPT's product layer rather than through direct file sharing between different task threads.

Work introduces early features of AI proactivity by suggesting personalized tasks based on user context and supporting scheduled or recurring automated tasks. It also features a cloud-hosted browser service capable of completing multi-step web workflows and integrates with an extensive directory of plugins that connect the agent to external applications, role-specific tools, and custom services.
