Norwegian AI firm appeals to block Google gigacenter

A Norwegian artificial intelligence firm has appealed a decision regarding a major technology project in Sweden. Local councils in Timra and Sundsvall previously approved a Google gigacenter project following analyses suggesting it would put the region on the international high-tech map, attract other businesses, draw skilled young workers, and expand the public tax base.

Supporters of local alternatives argued that domestic companies tend to keep more income within the region and invest in training a local workforce compared to foreign corporations. However, ownership records show that the objecting firm, Fossefall, is primarily Norwegian rather than Swedish, with only a small fraction held by a Swedish enterprise software firm and a larger stake held by a US artificial intelligence company. Additionally, major Swedish pension and investment funds hold billions of euros in Google parent Alphabet.

This situation matters because it highlights the tensions between local municipalities seeking foreign high-tech investments for economic growth and regional stakeholders competing for data center development opportunities. The outcome affects how international tech giants establish large-scale infrastructure in Nordic countries and how local communities weigh foreign investment against regional economic retention.
