Norway Plans Temporary Ban On AI Glasses In Public Places

Norway plans to propose a temporary ban on using artificial intelligence glasses and similar body-worn technology in selected public places. The government aims to present a bill to parliament as soon as possible and will establish an expert group to advise on permanent national regulations. Officials are examining which specific devices the ban will cover, including those equipped with cameras, audio recording, and artificial intelligence functions.

The proposed restriction responds to growing global concern that these devices allow people to be filmed, photographed, or recorded without their knowledge. Government officials have expressed worry that powerful new technology is entering everyday spaces without adequate public awareness or consent regarding privacy.

Meta manufactures popular smart glasses under brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley that enable users to capture photos and videos, make calls, play music, and execute artificial intelligence prompts. Company representatives point out that these glasses feature a bright front light that blinks during recording and disables the camera if tampered with. Meanwhile, privacy advocates and government regulators continue to scrutinize the balance between consumer convenience and individual surveillance risks in public spaces.
