Norway temporarily bans AI glasses in public places

Smart glasses equipped with built-in cameras and microphones have recently grown in popularity, largely due to a collaboration between Meta and Ray-Ban. However, their ability to easily record and photograph people without their knowledge has raised significant concerns regarding personal privacy.

In response to these issues, the Norwegian government has announced a temporary ban on using AI-equipped smart glasses in various public spaces. The restricted locations will include parks, beaches, museums, schools, and playgrounds.

Digitalization and Public Administration Minister Torgeir Micaelsen stated in a press release that the goal is to prevent a society where people feel constantly monitored in places where they expect privacy, which could cause them to feel unsafe and withdraw from public life.

The measure is not a total ban on the devices. Smart glasses will still be permitted for use inside private homes and in other locations where nearby individuals have given their consent. During this temporary restriction period, authorities will investigate and develop more permanent regulations for the technology.
