Norwegian Government Proposes Temporary Ban on AI Glasses in Public Spaces

The Norwegian government is proposing a temporary ban on artificial intelligence glasses in specific public spaces. These smart glasses look like ordinary eyewear but contain built-in cameras, microphones, and artificial intelligence technology, raising concerns about people being secretly photographed, filmed, or recorded without their knowledge.

The temporary ban will target locations where the general public gathers, places meant to protect children, and areas where personal privacy is especially important. Specific locations under consideration include parks, beaches, museums, shopping centers, playgrounds, schools, kindergartens, health institutions, and locker rooms. Exceptions will be permitted for vulnerable groups and for socially useful applications in limited cases.

The government plans to submit a formal legislative proposal to parliament as quickly as possible. To prepare for a permanent national regulation, an expert group will be established to provide advice. This initiative follows widespread concerns from the Norwegian Data Protection Authority, political parties, and various private companies that have already implemented internal bans due to risks involving information security and privacy.
