Forbrukerrådet ber kjedene stanse salget av KI-briller
The Norwegian Consumer Council urges optical chains to immediately halt the sale of artificial intelligence glasses while authorities determine their legal status. This call to action follows the government's announcement of plans for a temporary ban on these smart glasses in public spaces, schools, kindergartens, and healthcare institutions.
The Consumer Council argues that the high-tech glasses, developed by Meta in partnership with major eyewear producer EssilorLuxottica, promote an unwanted surveillance society and carry an enormous potential for abuse. Several prominent Norwegian optician chains, including Synsam, Brilleland, and Interoptik, currently stock the controversial products, while Specsavers does not carry them in its assortment.
Although exact sales figures in Norway remain unknown, global financial reports indicate massive growth for the product line. Sales surged from a combined two million pairs in 2023 and 2024 to over seven million pairs in 2025, with projections reaching twenty million pairs for 2026. The Norwegian digitalization minister stated that legislative work on the temporary ban is a high priority and will be presented to Parliament as quickly as possible.
