Development off the charts: Vibe coding brings major benefits and new challenges to a public sector organisation
The Danish Environmental Portal, a public sector collaboration supporting digital environmental management in Denmark, has significantly accelerated its software development by adopting AI-powered vibe coding tools such as Claude Code. Tasks that previously took anywhere from three days to a week are now completed within a single day. This operational shift involves the organization's twenty-five internal employees alongside forty to fifty external consultants primarily based in Vietnam and sourced from firms like Globeteam, Septima, and Testhuset.
While this rapid output increases efficiency, it introduces new operational bottlenecks. The organization can now generate features faster than they can be ordered or properly utilized, forcing management to deliberately slow down development to avoid overwhelming users. Consequently, the primary operational focus is shifting toward architecture, quality assurance, and project management to maintain control without stifling innovation.
The widespread use of AI coding tools also impacts financial management and budgeting. Traditional software maintenance costs are decreasing sharply, while expenditures on computing power, language models, server capacity, and tokens are rising. For the upcoming year, the organization has reduced its maintenance budget by twenty-five percent and increased server costs by ten percent, though precise long-term financial forecasting remains uncertain due to the early stage of the vibe coding phenomenon.
