September 2026: Top five AI stories of the month

Danske Bank and Mastercard successfully completed Denmark's very first payment made by an autonomous artificial intelligence agent. During the trial, a consumer instructed the AI agent to book a coffee tasting session on Mastercard's experiences platform, Priceless.com. The agent then completed both the booking and the payment entirely on its own using a Mastercard issued by the Danish bank.

This milestone represents Mastercard's newest agentic artificial intelligence development in Europe, following the launch of Agent Pay in April 2025. The initiative demonstrates a growing shift toward autonomous technology handling consumer transactions from start to finish without requiring manual checkout steps from the user.
